How to Compare Training Volume Without Treating It as a Score
Understand weight × reps totals in your workout log. Check sets, exercise choice and load conventions before interpreting a higher training-volume number.
In a lifting log, a common volume calculation adds up entered weight multiplied by completed repetitions. It is a useful bookkeeping total, provided you know what is included. It is not a universal score for workout quality, strength or effort.
The number becomes easier to interpret when you compare similar exercises, set types and recording conventions over similar periods.
Start with the arithmetic
For a set entered as 20 kg for 10 reps, the load-times-reps total is 200 kg·reps. Three identical completed sets total 600 kg·reps. The unit includes repetitions because this is a sum of repeated loads, not a single object weighing 600 kg.
If the third set contains 8 reps instead of 10, the total becomes 560 kg·reps. Recording the actual completed reps preserves that difference. Copying the planned target into every row would produce a different, inaccurate total.

Check what changed in the session
Total volume can increase for several different reasons: more weight, more reps, more completed sets, or a different exercise mix. Those are not interchangeable changes.

Open the underlying workout to identify the reason instead of relying on the total alone.
Keep the exercise mix in view
A kilogram-repetition total does not account for all differences between exercises. Machine settings, movement range and loading conventions can differ. A larger total in one movement is not enough to rank it above another.
Likewise, replacing a rep-based movement with a timed hold may reduce the displayed lifting-volume total without meaning that nothing was recorded. The hold needs its own duration measure. Carries and cardio need distance or time as appropriate.

Compare the same time window
A full calendar week and the first two days of the current week are different periods. Check the dates before reading a lower current total as a decline. The week may simply be unfinished.
Similarly, a 4-week view and a 12-week view contain different amounts of history. Use the period label and the workout count to understand what the summary covers. A lifetime total mostly grows as records accumulate; it is not a direct measure of recent change.
Use a weekly review to compare completed periods with their original dates visible.
Keep the number useful and limited
Check units, dumbbell conventions and set completion before trusting an unexpected spike. Correct actual entry mistakes at the source. Do not alter accurate records just to smooth the chart.
Then use volume as one description of your history alongside exercise results, training days and notes. You do not need to increase the total every week to keep a useful log. The purpose is to understand what you completed, with the calculation clear enough to check.
